In that tone he will tell the life of Caesar, from before his rise to power until his death, passing through his life and customs. Suetonius wanted to inform and amuse about imperial behavior. This is the first of the eight books that make up the work, in which twelve biographies are narrated. In them was found correspondence between Caesar and Octavio Augusto, material that he used for his Lives of the twelve Caesars, his best known work. Later, and as secretary at the time of Adriano, was able to access the imperial archives. He worked in Rome most of his life and was in the service of the emperor Trajan. 69-140 AD) was born when the Flavian dynasty came to power. Some of Ludlum's novels have been made into films and mini-series, including The Osterman Weekend, The Holcroft Covenant, The Apocalypse Watch, The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. Ludlum also published books under the pseudonyms Jonathan Ryder and Michael Shepherd. He is the author of The Scarlatti Inheritance, The Chancellor Manuscript, and the Jason Bourne series- The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, and The Bourne Ultimatum-among others. There are more than 210 million of his books in print, and they have been translated into thirty-two languages. Robert Ludlum was the author of twenty-seven novels, each one a New York Times bestseller. The captors need a young girl to break their curse. Then the Dawn Treader narrowly escapes being wrecked by a sea monster before reaching Deathwater Island, a place where they find one of the lost lords turned into a gold statue at the bottom of an enchanted pool.Īt the next island, invisible people capture the crew. Eustace is spared when Aslan, a lion who rules Narnia, changes him back into a human. It is revealed that one of the lost lords was also turned into a dragon and died in that form. Next, the crew endures several days of stormy weather before landing on an island where Eustace is enchanted and turns into a dragon. Caspian ultimately manages to re-establish Narnian lordship over the isles, abolish the slave trade there and discover one of the missing lords. The Dawn Treader’s first stop is the Lone Islands where the main characters, including Caspian, are kidnapped by slavers. Three years have past in Narnian time since the children last saw Caspian. Instead of being in the land of Narnia itself, the children are aboard a sailing ship called the Dawn Treader, and they take part in King Caspian X’s quest to find the seven lost lords of Narnia who went to explore the uncharted Eastern Seas and never returned. Edmund and Lucy are spending the summer with their annoying cousin Eustace when all three children are pulled through a magical painting and find themselves in the fantasy world of Narnia. I have promised to write down the entire history of these three poor children, but you haven't, so if you prefer stories that are more heartwarming, please feel free to make another selection. The pages of this book, I'm sorry to inform you, contain such unpleasantries as a giant pincher machine, a bad casserole, a man with a cloud of smoke where his head should be, a hypnotist, a terrible accident resulting in injury, and coupons. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire are sent to Paltryville to work in a lumber mill, and they find disaster and misfortune lurking behind every log. If this is the case, I advise you to put this book down instantaneously, because of all the books describing the unhappy lives of the Baudelaire orphans, THE MISERABLE MILL might be the unhappiest yet. I hope, for your sake, that you have not chosen to read this book because you are in the mood for a pleasant experience. 5/22/2023 0 Comments Love & olives by jenna evans welchLove originates in the Triune Godhead, within the eternal relationship that exists among the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (1 John 4:78). Love involves affection, compassion, care, and self-sacrifice. Michael Norton, one of the study co-authors summarizes the deep-seated and universal nature of the need to love in his excellent TED talk. In the most basic sense, love is the emotion felt and actions performed by someone concerned for the well-being of another person. More interestingly, the amount of money spent on others didn’t make a difference to happiness levels: those who spent $5 derived just as much happiness as those who spent $20. Those who spent the money on others, it turned out, grew happier than those who spent it on themselves. Participants in both groups were then asked to either spend the money on themselves or on others. In an interesting set of studies, participants were either given $5 or $20 as part of an experiment. When another person is attracted to you or likes you, that can increase your own liking, leading to romantic. Expressing love or compassion for others benefits not just the recipient of affection, but also the person who delivers it.Īnd what’s more, it appears that even small acts of kindness generate just as much happiness as do lofty acts. Romantic love occurs due to a combination of general attraction and social factors. We know that the desire to love and care for others is a hard-wired and deep-seated because the fulfillment of this desire enhances our happiness levels. You have to consciously take a step back to piece it all together. The book feels a little bit more disjointed. We have here a mix of Szczygieł’s observations and interviews with people.Īgain there is this mix of laughter and despair, but less pronounced than in Gottland. Very funnily describes popes visit in a country that perceives itself as the most atheist. He writes about Czech’s approach to religion, death, laughing and having fun. I liked the book a lot, but it lacks a bit the scale of Gottland. Again we get to explore the quirks of the Czech psyche with Szczygieł. The title translation would run something like this: Make Your Own Paradise. In this book Szczygieł comes back to the love of his life – the Czech Republic. Nie Ma, I read last year and it was so good and moving it brought me down for the entire May. I loved Gottland, his tribute to Czech Republic, blending beautifully the funny absurdities with quiet despair. Mariusz Szczygieł is a Polish journalist, at some point more known from his TV presence (he chaired one of the first Polish talk-shows) in the 2000s he focused again in writing. 5/22/2023 0 Comments Dead Chest Island by J.J. ParsonsIn contrast to cardiac rhabdomyoma, cardiac fibroma rarely regress spontaneously and often present with arrhythmias (32%), mostly ventricular tachycardia (risk exceeding 50%), ventricular fibrillation, murmur (20%), and abnormal chest x-ray (20%). Fibromas involving interventricular septum frequently induce conduction system disease with resulting rhythm abnormalities. It is probably because younger patients have a smaller heart and high tumor-to-heart ratio compared to older individuals, generating low cardiac output leading to poor outcomes. Septal involvement and age less than 17 years old at the time of diagnosis are associated with a poor prognosis. Hence, with somatic growth, the size of fibroma decreases relative to cardiac mass, but unlike rhabdomyoma, fibromas never resolve completely. There is a hypothesis that the tumor increases in size with physiological cardiac growth and stops growing when the growth of the heart completes, usually at 17 to 20 years of age. The most common site is the left ventricle (approximately 57% of the cases), followed by right ventricle (27.5%), and interventricular septum (17%). 5/22/2023 0 Comments Light on yoga onlineThe first segment deals with the understanding of Yoga. They felt at once inviting and dangerous, like fairy circles. The story really started to percolate after I visited Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka and saw “ghost doors” scattered around the forest – ruins where every part of a structure had fallen away except the doorframe. The first spark came to me when I was out hiking with my sister and I thought, “What if I turned around right now and she was just gone?” If there was no sound, no struggle, no one else around – it was such a horrifying thought. House of Hollow came from a scrapbook of different ideas that eventually merged together. What was your inspiration behind your most recent novel? First, a chat with Krystal Sutherland herself.
